Who Is This New Me and Why Do I Like Her?

Earlier this morning I was talking to a good friend of mine. I love him, I hate him – oh it changes every day. Maybe even every minute. But, sometimes we have good conversations when we’re getting along particularly well.

He was talking (he did most of the talking, even saying “OK – back to me” at one point when I mentioned myself) about how he thought it was weird that he’s all of a sudden getting all this female attention.

Now, he’s a good-looking man and he knows it. He’s got this intellectual, scruffy, unkempt look going for him that just tends to work. I mean, when you know him… it’s different. Well… different in the way that you’re like, “Sure, he’s cute and he just protected me from a guy who almost raped me; I’ll give it a try.” And then you do and you both realize, “Nope, that shouldn’t happen again.” But he’s a Southern gentleman and he’s a flirt – he’s the dirtier version of “TDH” (tall dark and handsome)

I can totally see why he’s attractive to girls. But the idea of “playing the field” creeps him out. He feels like he’s being dishonest and wrong. And normally, I’m all about that. I say, “No!” but I spent the better part of 10 minutes telling him why he SHOULD play the field and how it’s totally normal and OK.

Usually, I’m the mom of the group. I make sure everyone stays in line, or lecture people when they DON’T stay in line which is the case 99% of the time. But somehow, I’ve fallen into this weird place where I don’t judge people’s poor decisions. But in that particular group of friends - we all make mistakes, we’re all doing awful things, and all of our choices would be scoffed at from those on the outside looking in (with good reason). But, all of a sudden I’m supportive.

There are totally exceptions – but in the case of “playing the field” I don’t see anything wrong with it. Especially considering his current situation – he’s got nothing holding him back! A casual hook-up? Someone he sees every now and then? Why should he worry? Why should any of us worry?

We shouldn’t!
